Hinge Gives Well-Intentioned Daters a Second Chance with Education-Based Approach
Feeling safe and respected is essential to building a real connection. At Hinge, we set clear expectations for how daters should treat one another and believe in addressing harmful behavior when it occurs – while also giving daters the opportunity to learn from their mistakes.
When appropriate, Hinge gives well-intentioned daters a second chance to understand why their behavior crossed a line and how to communicate more respectfully with others moving forward.
What’s Changing
Last year, we introduced a new approach for how we handle profile moderation. Instead of removing an entire profile when a specific part of a profile violates our Terms, we remove only the flagged content and provide clear feedback on what was flagged and why. This gives the dater an opportunity to make a thoughtful adjustment, while still being a part of our platform.
This year, we’re bringing a similar approach to conversations on Hinge. When a highly-trained human moderator determines that a conversation violates our Community Guidelines on harassment, we consider the circumstances and severity of the behavior. While severe violations will continue to result in account removal, for minor violations, the dater will receive a warning and must complete a brief educational walkthrough before continuing to use the app — which includes acknowledging Hinge’s Community Guidelines and our expectations for respectful behavior.
How It Works
We want to give daters clarity on what behavior is expected on our platform and what violates our policies — along with an opportunity to correct it. When a dater receives a warning, they’ll see a brief educational walkthrough with examples of harmful behavior, including how certain messages may make another person feel, what kinds of language to avoid, and how someone could express interest, use humor, or offer a compliment in a more respectful way.
For example, a dater might be reminded to build mutual interest before making a conversation sexual, keep humor playful rather than personal, and avoid unsolicited comments about someone’s body.
The goal is to help someone recognize the impact their words can have. Social, cultural, and generational differences can shape how people communicate and what they mean by it, but they do not lessen the impact of unwanted or offensive behavior. This matters especially for people who are more likely to experience it online, including women, LGBTQIA+ daters, and people of color.
We believe in giving well-intentioned daters a chance to reflect and change their behavior, but accountability remains essential to creating a safe dating experience on Hinge. Daters who repeatedly violate our Terms or Community Guidelines may be permanently banned, and more serious behavior can result in an immediate ban.
This work builds on Hinge’s ongoing commitment to creating a safe, positive experience for daters. Safety is built into every stage of the experience, from profile creation and verification to reporting, moderation and enforcement. "Are You Sure?" encourages daters to reconsider potentially harmful language before sending a message, "Did This Bother You?" lets daters flag interactions that made them uncomfortable, and Comment Filter lets daters block specific words, phrases, and emojis they don’t want to see, and automatically filters out disrespectful comments, too.
Hinge is always looking for ways to respond more clearly and fairly to different kinds of behavior, while helping build a safer place for daters looking for meaningful connections. Through enforcement and education, Hinge holds daters accountable and gives them the tools to do better.
